Ignoring Your Back Muscles Could Lead to Big Problems Down the Road

Low levels of back pain may be a sign that you are not concentrating on the right muscles in your work outs. Strong back muscles help maintain posture, decrease head aches, increase circulation through proper poster and protect the spine from injury. Most people who engage in weightlifting and a regular exercise routine regularly ignore their back muscles.

Whether we are at the office, driving our vehicle, cleaning out the garage or watching television many people have poor posture. They slouch, sit on their wallets, push their shoulders forward and lift with improper form. This creates additional stress on your lower back muscles which can cause them to easily fatigue. This is part of the reason why the back hurts and headaches happen.

When lower back muscles are weak they will continue to degenerate throughout a person's lifetime. This will cause additional problems with your back, can cause headaches and potentially put you in a stroller later on in life. Having strong back muscles will help you in many other instances.

Part of the problem is people's impressions of what the ideal person should look like. When men go to the gym they will work on their arms, their abdomen, legs and upper back muscles to get that nice V shape. Woman love to have a flat tummy and will concentrate their efforts in this region.

As people work on those areas that are seen as "beautiful" they continue to strengthen many of the areas that pull against the back. For example, really strong stomach muscles but really poor back muscles may actually give that hunched over look later in life. One muscles is simply too powerful for the other so balancing them is important.

In order to avoid headaches, lower back pain and poor posture it is necessary to work on more muscles then the lower back. A holistic work out should include the Hamstrings, the Piriformis (running from back of femur to the base of the spine), Psoas Major (attached to the front portion of the lower spine), and the Gluteus. Each of these muscles should be put into your workout routine.

Weightlifting and focusing on these areas certainly helps and is a preferable method. However some people don't have a gym membership or weights in their house. In such cases walking, biking and water therapy also help strengthen the lower back muscles. In each of these exercises the muscles are used regularly in the action as well as to stabilize the body.
