Ikaria: The Greek Seclusion Island

Konko
When vacation time comes, there are many destinations that come to mind. Ikaria, a secluded Greek island, won't be one of them. Not many vacationers know about Ikaria, and that's what makes it so special. Ikaria is like a beautiful paradise where one can wake up to a view of the ocean without even the slightest sound of civilization (Unless your in one of Ikaria's towns). If relaxation is your goal, Ikariawon't fail.

History:

Ikaria is known to have been inhabited as early as 7000 BC. It was once part the enormous Ottoman Empire until Ikaria broke away and formed a country for itself in June of 1912. The Free State of Ikaria, as it came to be called, only lasted for five months. During those five months, most citizens suffered extreme hardships, having limited supplies of food and clothing. Ikaria was acquired by the country of Greece in November of 1912 and lost their independence forever. Nowadays, Ikaria is a serene island that attracts a small but growing amount of tourists.

Getting There:

The only two ways to get to Ikaria are by air or by ship. If traveling by air, flying Olympic Airlines into Agios Kirikos Airport is your only option. If traveling by ship, expect to spend a whole day onboard. Hellas Ferries and GA Ferries are currently the only choices. Ikaria's ports are located in Agios Kirikos and Evdilos.

Accommodations:

Although there are a few hotels in the two major towns of Ikaria, Agios Kirikos and Evdilos, most people prefer to stay in quaint studios and pensions. This type of accommodations can be found all over the island, and many have fabulous views of the sea. The best part is that breaking the bank isn't necessary, most of Ikaria's studios and pensions only cost $35 a night. There is no reason to worry however, as all are clean and spacious.

Beaches:

Heavenly beaches await you in Ikaria. Ikaria's beaches are among the purest in the world and some allow nudists. Although tourists are generally intimidated by this, by the time their Ikaria stay is over they are comfortable in the nudist beach environment. For people who do not like the nudist concept, there are plenty of other beautiful beaches, such as beautiful Mesakiti Beach.

Hiking:

If beaches are not your thing, hiking is definitely an option. There are hundreds of trails (dirt roads that are rarely used) that are full of wonderful exhibits and aromas. Guided tours are also available if you plan to hike "The Round of Raches". The Round of Raches is a 25 KM trail that starts at the coastline and ends in the town of Christo Raches.

Nightlife & Festivals:

If your going to Ikaria, you should not expect much nightlife. Ikaria is a calm island that does not hold parties every night (Unlike Mykonos). If you attend a festival, however, prepare to be blown away. Ikarian festivals include dancing, drinking, eating, and more drinking. If you are a partygoer, you'll be in paradise.

Conclusion:

If you are in the need of deep relaxation, Ikaria may be your best bet money wise as you won't have to spend a fortune. Locals are truly friendly and will go out of their way to help you. The experiences you will take back from a visit to Ikaria will last a lifetime.
