Ikea caters to the European consumer which means that their product is also made to cater to the European consumer. Most people find it difficult to assemble Ikea products because of the diverse assembly instructions. There is nothing like getting instructions in a totally different language. With every Ikea product that has ever been bought, I've spent a number of hours trying to figure out what is what and what goes where. But this is a perk that most consumers don't mind dealing with, all because Ikea has great furniture.
Even though Ikea has not only great furniture they have beautiful fixtures that most people would spend a life time trying to save for. But one of the issues that most consumers deal with is the fact that a lot of the Ikea fixtures aren't compatible. This is one of the issues I've dealt with when buying fixtures through Ikea. My bathroom sink fixture was by far a perfect fit, I had to purchase extra attachments to get the job done.
To ship or not to ship?
Shopping at your local Ikea store has always been the better choice. Shipping cost of Ikea products can kill your bill. Most of the Ikea products are big items and this is where most of your charges come from. And not only are the products you buy big in size, more times out of ten your furniture or fixture is coming from another country. And unlike a lot of companies that offer fast shipping for more money. Ikea offers fast shipping for more money but nine times out of ten, you aren't going to get your order any faster. A couple of my orders took more than a month to get delivered to my house.
Customer service for the average American is a hassle
Dealing with Ikea customer service is unlike any customer service I've dealt with. Having to deal with someone who barely understands anything you are talking about can become a huge hassle and most of the time it ends up in frustration. I've had to call Ikea customer service more than once and each conversation ended up with me saying, "thanks but I'll figure it out myself."
There is a huge language barrier when it comes to Ikea customer relations. And considering the fact that Ikea serves to practically everyone, there should be some form of middle ground.
I love Ikea furniture, as well as their fixtures but honestly I rather buy Ikea products from my local furniture store. I've learned over the course of many years that most furniture stores offer Ikea products, you just have to look. I can't say that I'm going to allow the negative experiences I've had with Ikea stop me from buying Ikea furniture and fixtures but I will say that it will cause me to think twice about buying online. I get more support an help when I buy it from my local store.
