Electronic devices can be considered illegal for a variety of reasons. Some electronic devices may be illegal because of the age of the person using them. Other electronic devices are illegal in certain countries or states but not others. How the electronic device is used can be a determining factor that makes it illegal.

A MIRT is an electronic device that emergency personnel uses to change stop lights. It is illegal to own and operate such a device unless it is being used by designated personnel in the line of duty. I have seen schematics of cell phone signal blocker circuits. The principle is quite simple. Construct a transmitter that sends out a signal that covers the bandwidth that cell phones use. If the signal is stronger than the cell signal being received it will block phones in the immediate vicinity from receiving or sending calls.

It is illegal in many countries and states to use these, but some places it is okay. A lot of people feel it is impolite and annoying when people use cell phones in public places such as restaurants and movie theaters.
