The one-day Energy Star rebate plan may or may not bring out the crowds that Black Friday brings, but Illinois residents are still gearing up for the one-day "Fantastic Friday" sale at 8 a.m., on Fri., Sept. 24.

In exchange for an older appliance, customers at electronics and furniture stores like Sears and Home Depot will be able to get new refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers and dishwashers.

The other two energy saver events in February and April resulted in 60 percent sold refrigerators and freezers, according to EnergySavers.gov.

In order to participate though, consumers must be willing to give up their old appliances and cannot order appliances online. They must physically visit the retail stores and purchase available Energy Star products.

Total funding for the Energy Star program in Illinois is over $12.3 million and over $31 million has been spent by shoppers so far.
