A Picture is worth a thousand words. But for most photographers, nothing less than a story will do. So how does a photographer get started? How does he/she find his/her success in this ever changing field?

Any successful photographer will tell you that no one can teach you how to envision greatness, create fantastic compositions, create perfect lighting, find perfect locations and get perfect actors while being inventive, artistic and spontaneous. What he/ she will also tell you is that there are some ground rules that can help you get there. So what are these ground rules and where do you learn them? A school of course!

A school focusing on photography can give you basic principles that will teach you sure-shot ways of impressing the eye and will enable your creativity, sense of adventure and your sensibilities as an artist to help you take your excellent work into the realm of genius.

When looking for a successful photography college, some key items are worth considering: a good location that can make traveling easier, cheap tuition that minimizes extra expenditure, a great collection of equipment for loan, a specialty in the field of photography, a great curriculum (which is in pace with the times and suits the complex lives of students) and of course a great teaching staff (teachers that nurture each student and are eager to help). In the state of Illinois, we are lucky to find such institutions in abundance.

The Illinois Institute of Art (Chicago), the International Academy of Design and Technology (Chicago), The Academy of Art (Chicago), The Illinois Institute of Art (Schaumburg) and the International Academy of Design and Technology (Schaumburg) all have degrees that focus on photography, visual communication, 3d Animation and Multimedia Degrees that can help expand the mind of the budding artist. Each school approaches photography in a unique manner and allows the student great scope in its application. Also, they provide fashion courses, interior design courses and courses in media that photography can easily be applied to.

Photography is a diverse field and one look at the curricula of these colleges tells us that an individual can take photography and use it in everything from graphic design, fashion, interior design, advertising, animation. Who knew that you could make a living photographing stock photos? With the Internet, photography has become even more important. Who can forget the much loved and hated pictures of celebrities we see on our favorite pop- culture websites? Photography is important in most fields and this is where it becomes a great place for an artist to invest his/her interest.

Today, photography is a very viable and stable job option and the photography courses/classes and degrees provided in the Illinois photography and Art Schools can provide a great foundation in the successful careers of our future photographers. Someone said that a good photograph needs a foreground, middle ground and a background. We say that it takes spirit, adventure, strong foundations and a great art school! So go ahead, take a shot!
