ILO DVDR05 DVD Recorder

If You're Looking for a Good DVD Recorder Look Elsewhere

At just under $100 the ILO DVDR05 DVD recorder/player proves the old saying that "you get what you pay for". If the player delivered what it promised it would be a great unit but the bottom line is that it just doesn't record well.

Do you remember the final moments of the last "American Idol" when they picked the winner or the episode of "The Amazing Race" where they traveled through the wonders of Athens, Greece? Well I don't because the recorder stopped. Not only did it stop but it decided that the DVD was no good and recorded none of the program. So far the recorder is about 50/50 on recording and even when it does decide to record it often stops after recording only 30 minutes of a program. To me this is completely unacceptable.

The player when used with cable TV can be programmed to record your favorite programs … that is, if it records them at all. It is not compatible with satellite TV and will only record whatever satellite station you are currently on and nothing else.

The remote is nicely set up and has all of the standard functions that are common with DVD players. It is easy to use even without a manual. The only thing missing from the regular options is a step mode that allows you to step through each frame when on pause.

The DVDR05 features two composite inputs; input one, which also includes an s-video connection and an additional composite video (composite video two). It also has a digital video input and an input for an antenna. It has several outputs including the standard composite output, a coax and s-video outputs.

In addition to DVD's the player plays MP3's, WMA files and JPG's. It also supports Dolby digital. The one positive thing that I can say about the unit is that it does seem to play just about any disk. I was given several DVD's that were copied on a computer and was told that they would not play on a regular DVD player but they did play on this player.

The ILO DVDR05 overall is just not a reliable recorder. If you are looking for a good DVD player this unit would certainly qualify but for a recorder it would be better to spend the extra $100 and get something that will actually do the job. As a budget consumer I would have to give this product an F and would recommend avoiding it entirely.

  • The DVDR05 has some nice features but does not record well.
  • Save your money. The price may look attractive but you get what you pay for.
  • If you are interested in a DVD recorder you should look past the DVDR05.
DVD means "Digital Versatile Disc" or "Digital Video Disc" and was developed in the early 1990's.
