I'm Coming Out

Michelle K. Miller
January 14th, 2009-- this day is my one-year wedding anniversary to my husband, Ben.

Today is also the day that I am coming out.

Even though I find no fault with it for others who are doing so, I am not talking about coming out as a lesbian or bisexual.

My coming out is an emergence from the still-lingering shadows that left some confused and wondering, "Is she, or isn't she for the rights of the LGBT community?" Well, let all wondering minds be satisfied. As of today, there is no more wondering. I am officially coming out as an LGBT ally.

Why did I choose today, the day of my wedding anniversary? I think it is symbolic to fully come out on my wedding anniversary, to make a statement that I hope that, someday, my LGBT loved ones will be able to have the same freedom and satisfaction of having a wedding, and anniversaries to follow.

I am also choosing today, in honor of my high school friend, Travis, who was one of the first people I knew to come out as gay. Today is his birthday. I celebrated by telling him that I hope that he and his partner can have the same freedoms as me someday, and that I am rooting for it, and fighting for it.

That is a wonderful thing to come out in support of. "Straight allies" are very much needed, now perhaps more than ever.
