I'm Enjoying Home Town Buffet to Go!

Darlene L.
A few months ago, I heard about Home Town Buffet's "To Go" menu. Home Town Buffet is a chain of buffet restaurants that allow you to eat as much as you can for one price. They also go by other names such as Old Country Buffet and Country Buffet. I've found the food to be very good at all the locations I have tried. Items are mostly American home cooking style and there are often different menus depending on the day.

I have a problem with eating a whole lot of food all at once and if I were to actually stay there and eat, I wouldn't be able to get my money's worth. You are not allowed to take food home if you decide to eat at a table there. But, I like the food and would like to eat there without feeling like I have to stuff myself until I'm sick. But, with Home Town Buffet to Go, you can pile up a take-home box and take it with you.

There are several different ways you can take your food to go. You can get a lunch or dinner meal for about the same price that you would if you went to any other fast food restaurant. If you want more sides, you can get an extra container for each extra side and pay about two dollars each. Or, you can get a soup and salad combo to go and choose between vegetable salads, pasta salads, carrot-raisin salad, cottage cheese, and one of at least three types of soups. Drinks are not included and prices can vary depending on location.

The Soup and Salad To Go is perfect for those on a diet. The restaurant often has at least one healthy choice of soup and many of the other ones are not too high in calories, either. And, there is always a choice of low calorie salad dressing in which you can put in a seperate container. Nutrition information of many of the items are listed on the Home Town Buffet website.

There is one rule, though, all containers must be able to close before you leave the building. I've found that the size of the buffet container allows me to put enough food in there for almost two meals. Lunch meals are often cheaper than dinner meals, but offer less choices.

So, if you are like me and can't eat a whole lot at once, but still like home style food from Home Town Buffet, check out their To Go option.

Thanks for the comments! Recently, Home Town Buffet has changed their menu and has made the "To Go" system more complicated. As I understand it, you can still get items "to go", but it's not as economical as it used to be.

I like Old Country Buffet, used to go quite a lot when I loved in Indiana. It was great when my daughter was young, as it allowed you to eat at your pace. The food was really good too. I love Souplantation / Sweet Tomatoes as it's known in South Florida. Excellent salad bar and home made soups, great value. It's on our list for every trip to Florida.

It's a good trend - I think Souplantation has a To Go option as well. Thanks for the tip!
