I'm Writing My Heart Tonight

Shirley A Mandel
There is gold in them there hills, but you have to dig deep to find the golden nuggets. I said that to say this: In a world that is totally disillusioned with Christianity and the church, I know that there are some really devoted Christians that are truely serving God and man. They are unsung, tireless volunteers who work in soup kitchens, food pantries, hospitals and other helping-hand ministries all over the world. They are the ones who are there when a natural disaster hits to hand out bottled water and to rebuild houses and shattered lives. And you rarely see them on TV.

But almost everyone agrees that there is something wrong with the American church, even those within the church. The problem seems to be that many American christians have got their priorities upside down, and the central focus is all wrong. In a word, the American church is distracted. We are distracted by material things, money, prestige, politics (yes politics), and the American dream itself. We are distracted like Martha was distracted by the affairs of this world when all God called us to do is to "go into all the world and preach the gospel," and serve the less fortunate of the world. Yet we join "Tea Parties" because we don't want to pay the taxes that it takes to help the poor. JUST WHAT PART OF THE WORD "GO" DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND, PEOPLE?

Yet many believers spend a considerable amount of time trying to destroy our political enemies by flooding the internet with bad political jokes trashing the "ungodly" man of the hour. Since when do we have time for that? People are lost, suffering and confused today, but politics seems to be more important than helping and reaching them.

Yes we should vote for the most just person. And you should run for office yourself to preserve justice, if that's your calling, but watch that you don't get ensnared in the corruption of politics-mud-slinging and lining your pocket. It is important that we pray for our enemies and not strive to destroy them. If you are called to get involved, strive to keep a pure heart. Spreading the love of God through the gospel of Jesus Christ is why we are here. It is why we are called "the salt of the earth."

Jesus is not a Republican. And Jesus is not a Democrat. God's kingdom is not of this world. So lets live to save a little piece of this world that He died for.

Wow. What a pure and simple understanding, and so clearly relayed through use of modern technology. You strike a sharp blow to a blunted American church body. Great work. I pray it awaken the sleeping minds, and that we will always live to the words of God first, foremost, and last. Amen.
