Well, let's take this thing (Kwanzaa, et al.) a bit further: the phrase "African-American" is a combination of ignorance and racism.
I'm caucasian. If I were to maintain, "all Americans are white", would that not be: 1. ignorant; and, 2. racist? Stay with me here for a moment.
A few years back there was a guy named P.W. Botha...former president of South Africa (that's on the continent of Africa, is it not?). Now, had P.W. and his family chosen to emigrate to the USA, renounce S.African citizenship and become U.S. citizens, would not he (and they) become "African-American"? Uh-huh. But ol' P.W.'s white. And there are one heckuva lot of Africans who'd object to being left out of consideration when the subject of Africans came up and everyone assumed that 'everyone from Africa is black'.
I wonder, do the blacks in Europe call themselves 'African-American'?
