Dentures are no longer something associated with getting old. Teenagers are now in the denture market. Having to get dentures can be a tough decision to make. Immediate dentures have become a popular trend. Many are embarrassed and afraid to go out into public. Immediate dentures are often offered at many dentist offices. However, immediate dentures have their ups and downs. Any dental patient thinking about getting immediate dentures should do their research and give the course of action some thought before committing.

An immediate denture (or temporary denture) is a denture that is immediately placed into your mouth after extractions. Instead of waiting for the swelling to go down, you are given a denture that is put into your mouth right away. Before extractions, the dentist will measure your mouth to make the immediate denture. You do not go without dentures or teeth for any period of time. They are immediately inserted.

Immediate dentures have their advantages. The number one advantage being that the patient never goes without teeth. Immediate dentures act as a protector for the raw gums and open wounds. They also reduce bleeding from extractions. Immediate dentures promote healing. This type of denture brings a little relief to the patient because it minimizes the pain. Immediate dentures will allow you to get used to speaking with the denture in. Being able to chew is also an advantage of having immediate dentures.

One disadvantage to immediate dentures is that they cost more. Multiple adjustments will be needed because the dentures where made at a time when swelling was at its maximum. Gums shrink for up to a year. Since teeth were measured while they were still in the mouth, measurements may not add up. It will be necessary to make more office appointments for these adjustments. Your dentist will be able to inform you of any packages or discounts that may be available.

Immediate dentures have special instructions. They are not to be removed for a certain period of time. This can be hard for some patients because blood can pool in the denture. It is very important not to take them out. Your dentist will give you any other special instructions you may need to follow.

The decision to get dentures is not an easy one. The first thought is usually about appearance. Immediate dentures eliminate that worry. They are immediately placed into your mouth as soon as teeth are pulled. However, they do have their disadvantages also. Your dentist will advise you on the best course of action for you to follow.
