Immigrants in America Embracing Our Culture and Language

Denise
Americans have had mixed feelings regarding cultural diversity due to a surge of patriotism toward the countries immigrants left behind. Each time an American hears an immigrant use their language to others of their dialect it is seen as a threat to the American society at large. Meaning, languages spoken to other people who understand its leaves others out. This is similar to how many of them feel who are left out when they do not understand too much of the language. People tend to cling to those people who remind them of the calmness of home rather that the fast hustle and bustle here in the U.S.A. However, the language barrier divides people into groups instead of melding each culture together as one cohesive unit. Where ever any one chose to live there will be a norm. For example, in France some may speak English, but who wants to speak english but the english speaking people there. In China, they may know english, but the language will always be Chinese.

Here in America, we are of many cultures and nationalities, but we will always speak American. Moreover, American believe that the immigrants should learn our language well enough to be a proud American citizen. The idea of forsaking the culture you grew up with should not be done. In fact, everyone has a right to be proud of who they and where they came from. Nevertheless, We should realize that America may have flaws, but this is a country that we should be proud to call our own. To make it an easy transition for our new citizens, we should provide a cultural friendly environment where they don't have to be embarrassed about their accent. In addition, we should appreciate the diversity among us with open arms. It is impossible to ask someone else to come out of their shell when we practically live within our own. Another thing to remember is ourselves in other countries, how we behave. One can begin by asking themselves how a man could forget he was in another country and get publicly canned. Other countries have rules of their own, and would like you to speak their language along with following their customs during your stay.

For example, you can buy the clothing that other people wear there in case our American fashion is too revealing. Canada has embraced diversity, and people walk around in their traditional garments while speaking the tongue of their country. I guess that we all want to be included, and we all want to belong somewhere. Perhaps, one way to solve this is to bring people together through activities we all can enjoy. Such as, an annual multicultural festival where all nations can prepare their traditional dishes even for vegans and vegetarians. Each nation can have dancers, music, art, and other items for sale. Before each performance each speaker can tell you about their culture, and what each song means. Afterward, people who want to know more can introduce themselves and tell them how much you like it. Then, whenever more performances come we can all enjoy each others differences. Then we will have our melting pot at last with all of us in harmony as proud Americans with flavor.
