Immigration: Harmful or Helpful?

Josh Street
"Illegal is anything that is against the law...Undocumented is anything that can no longer be verified" - Peter Romanenko. Illegal may have different meanings to different people but they still cause problems. The main ones are outlined by Thomas Sowell in which "taxpayers cover the costs of their healthcare, imprisonment and everything else." With an estimated 11 million illegals in America, many are bound to break laws, which only puts more strain on taxpayers who are paying for them to be in cuffs. Children of immigrants are getting free educations also provided by the taxpayers. The risk of disease and terrorist attacks also raises greatly with the unaccounted number of people entering the country.

Americans have two different views on the situation and is a major factor that will most likely be brought up in the upcoming elections. It's very important to all Americans because they are the ones basically paying for them to live here. These people take the jobs many Americans simply won't do because they are better than assuming an odd job or two. People that live here legally deserve the chance to not worry about having new diseases introduced and that's just what could be happening with immigrants.

The U.S. House of Representatives wants to deal with the illegal immigration by opposing the ability for illegal immigrants to obtain legal residency without having to first return to their home country. While agreeing with the president that there are plenty of jobs Americans just won't do, employers need to stay in business but have workers. There seems to be a Jekel and Hyde thing going on by saying they don't like or what illegal immigration yet its own citizens wont take available jobs. Instead of making a wall or better fence they want to beef up border patrol. Some say enforcing employer sanctions would cause a lot of illegals to lose their job and leave the country themselves. Ruben Navarrette points out that there are still some flaws in the approach. After all how would you secure a 2000-mile long border or hope people "self-deport" themselves.

The Senate seems to want to do things in favor of the illegal people in order to eventually get votes, mainly from Hispanic people. Camouflage is also needed to not lose other votes given up by going after Hispanic votes. In a world of pleasing people, that must be a daunting task. Businesses near illegal aliens want cheap labor and even though it is easy to deny you knew they were illegal, it would be easier but owners. Some big issues that may be overlooked are that police cannot arrest illegal aliens just for being illegal, they would have to commit a crime. Also the bill puts amnesty ahead of security, wouldn't this encourage people to break more laws?

My solution to illegal immigration is, as most things, a combination of both sides. Of course this is no full proof thing and just something I thought up of real quick. There needs to be a law intact that limits the number of illegal aliens saying if they can manage to get into the country then good for them. When that number is reached the border patrol and police needs to start deporting. Border patrol should also be beefed up so it becomes much harder to get into the country. Taxes should be lowered so Americans aren't wasting all their money on things that are being done by people not even allowed here. Businesses need to grow yet entrepreneurs need to be able to put pressure on existing businesses to thrive. You can't have a double standard, saying one thing yet doing another. There needs to be some sort of rule that if illegals start to riot, unionize or rally then they are surrendering their few rights and can be deported. Of course everything has to do with politics and being reelected so throw in a scandal and there is my plan.
