Impeachment and Resignation Being Called for on South Carolina Governor, Mark Sanford

Karen Barnes
Once again Governor Mark Sanford is back in the news. I am not surprised to his name back in the news. I knew he was going to be under a watchful eye after admitting to the affair and disappearing for a week after his staff lied about his whereabouts.

His recent activities in the news has reminded me of memories of watching President Nixon and his part in Watergate on television. Even though Governor Sanford didn't commit crimes of break-ins, wire-tapping, and other things that happened during the Watergate Scandal, his misuse of funds to meet with his mistress and his staff lying for him, made this scandal come to mind.

Even though the South Carolina Governor isn't in the same league as former President Nixon, misuse of local, state, and federal funds is a serious issue. At this point, we only know what the news is telling us of how in depth the use of government funds have been used during his affair with the woman in Argentina. I can see how GOP Leaders for this governor are calling for his impeachment and resignation.

Not only have the GOP Leaders and Senators for the state raised questions about his travel and affair, they are now questioning his ethics. It wasn't so much that he took his trips, it's how he took the trips that have came into question.

I think government officials who aren't following the rules of travel set before them, should be scrutinized. If government officials can't keep themselves in check, someone needs to do it for the people who voted them into office.

Then there is former President Clinton who had an affair with an intern. Which everyone in the United States has heard about. Governor Mark Sanford's affair with the woman in Argentina wreaks of the same errors as this former president. The governor could have been forgiven by the public if he had been honest about when asked rather than hiding the truth about the affair. As for his wife, I don't even want to speculate on that. I can imagine Senator Clinton, at the time, and South Carolina's First Lady Sanford have common feelings about their husbands actions.

I know comparing South Carolina Governor Sanford's actions against Former President Nixon is like comparing apples to oranges in many aspects. However, there are quite a few similarities in some instances with Sanford and Nixon. The similarity between Former President Clinton and Governor Sanford is they both had affairs while in office.

I am fairly certain the whole South Carolina Governor Sanford's call for impeachment and resignation isn't over. While there is the whole process the South Carolina Legislature has to go through is just the next step, more may come out during their process of his final days in office one way or another.

I kind of agree with saul on this, even though the guy sounds like a complete jerk and slightly idiotic. :)

Unless they can prove Sanford misused public funds, there is no need to impeach him or force him to resign. They could try to prove that he's done a bad job as governor. That would be a matter of opinion and unprovable. So without proving he's misused funds, what do they have? The same thing they had on Clinton. Nothing. The man was elected to do a job. His private life is his own business. What he did may have been irresponsible and idiotic, but its his private life. Let him be. Oh, wait, he did it on gubernatorial time? Really? Is that all they've got? Prove misuse, misappropriation, malfeasance, dereliction, or something -- or these legislators that are all high-horsing the man need to get back to legislating...
