Imperfections in Human Personalities

Lee VanAmee
There is a curious trait in all human beings that requires us to think of ourselves to always be right and that others who disagree with our opinions are obviously incorrect and of course misinformed! It is a real battle with our minds when we try to take an open minded stance on anything. Even the most open people I have ever known have their own "style" to sneakily "correct" someone, even though all the other person did was to have a different opinion. Not right, not wrong, just different. We as a society are very critical of others, while we don't see the actual truth in the exchange of ideas. The world is a colorful place and black and white thinking like this tends to minimize our experiences and relationships, all under the guise of doing the right thing.

When two or more perfectionists get together and have a conversation or an exchange of ideas; watch out. You will be in for some verbal sparring that will make a good boxing match look like a walk in the park! There is a "fight to the finish" style that one of these participants will get the last word and "win the prize". But the "prize" is just some superior false confidence that fades as soon as the next encounter presents itself. The law of the world that anything we fear will come upon us, definitely comes in to play here, because you will always and forever have people in your life who don't see things the way you do, and that is a great thing, it helps us all grow. I think that some judgment is crucial to your survival; but most of the "should thinking" is born out of an insecure reaction to appear more intelligent than you really are. It usually backfires though because you come across as pampas and needy.

I have battled with perfectionism all of my life, even as a child I had trouble balancing what is realistic behavior and goals, etc. with what I thought "should be", "in a perfect world", If you are a perfectionist yourself, you view the world with jaded lenses. The worse part about this behavior is that while you are thinking that you know all the answers, the reality is that you are dealing with an unrealistic outlook and will constantly be disillusioned and disappointed because 90% of the time the world does not act according to your rules of how you think it "should".
