Centers Are Effective in the Kindergarten Class

Creating learning centers in your Kindergarten classroom has great effectiveness and encourages group as well as individual learning experiences. It is absolutely vital that your kindergartner has full advantage of learning through center groups and here are a few examples of learning centers that you may want to implement into your curriculum.

Housekeeping

It is never too early to teach children about proper home values. let's take this a step further though. Imagine observing a child holding a baby. We can learn so much. For instance, if you notice them hitting or being aggressive towards the baby, shouldn't this send you a red flag? There are many advantages to centers and notable child behaviors are very important.

A child has the ability to explore professions that they may enjoy later in life, through wearing the uniforms that you would put in the center. They can learn about cooking and cleaning as well as family core values, like table manners.

Arts and Crafts

Teaching a child to be creative and "allowing" them to explore their creativity through art, is absolutely essential. In an effort to boost their self esteem and image, encourage self portraits. You can add many types of crafts to the center. Allow them to choose what they would use. Some examples are buttons, yarn, glitter, paints, magazines, beads and ribbon. Encourage them to draw pictures of their family and things that they love.

Book Shelf

This is the most important center that could be created in the classroom. There should be a wide variety of books that the children should be able to choose from. Of course add bean pillows and other comfy chairs, making their reading experience more comfortable. Encourage them to read to the class. Use easy books and help them sound out the words to the books, if necessary.

ABC's Colors and Numbers

All classrooms need a center with these three essentials. magnets are perfect. I could go to a department store and purchase different colored ABC and number magnets. You could use flash cards and puzzles in this group. Encourage the children to spell out their name and give the color of each letter. There are so many creative ways to enhance learning through this center.

As you can see, centers work for the advantage of everyone. They allow the teacher to maintain complete focus on an individual student so that they can properly observe and document learning progress. These centers also help by allowing the children to behave in a comfortable and "familiar" learning environment. Centers are good for every age group, but definitely vital in Kindergarten through third and forth grades.
