Importance of Extensive Tests Before Psychiatric Diagnosis

When a psychiatrist is in the process of diagnosing a patient, the diagnosis can change the patient's life. For this reason alone, it is extremely important that extensive testing be done before any psychiatric diagnosis is made. Misdiagnosis of a psychiatric nature can change the treatment the patient gets drastically from what they really need to happen.

Importance of extensive testing before psychiatric diagnosis is made:

Medications- There are three scenarios when it comes to medication for someone how may have a disorder. The first scenario is when a person is given medication, which may be incorrect. The problem for which the psychiatrist/psychologist is suggesting the medication may be something completely different than what the patient actually has. Without extensive testing to ensure the best possible diagnosis, the patient may be taking medications that aren't correct for their disorder.

A patient may not need the medication at all. Misdiagnosis usually occurs when there isn't enough extensive testing in order to gather the necessary information on the patient. Misdiagnosis could mean that a patient is taking medications that he/she doesn't need in the first place. Without proper diagnosis, there is no way to tell for sure that the patient will benefit from the drugs.

The patient may not be given any medication if there is a misdiagnosis, which could be medication they need in order to more properly function in society. Doctors need to make a correct diagnosis to ensure that medication is dispensed and done so properly. Psychiatric patients aren't guinea pigs. It is extremely important that the diagnosis is on target the first time around. Otherwise, the patient does become a guinea pig testing medications to see if they work or not.

Continued Therapy- Therapy for a psychiatric patient is extremely important to possible recovery. Even when there is no "cure" for the problem, counseling can make all the difference in the world as to how the patient functions within society. Talking through their problems and getting advice on how to handle tough situations can change the entire life of the patient.

Hospitalization- There is a chance, in severe cases, that a patient might be directed to be checked into a hospital. Misdiagnosis can delay this type of treatment for patients who may be a danger to themselves and to others. It also delays getting specialized treatments for those patients. There is also the danger that someone who is misdiagnosed in a psychiatric setting could be hospitalized when there are other options available.

The importance of getting the proper diagnosis through extensive testing is the only way to avoid the above issues. Just as a medical doctor takes care to do extensive testing to find out for sure what illness the patient has, so must a psychiatrist. It means all the difference to the outcome of a psychiatric patient.
