Importance of Pet Owner Responsibility to Prevent Infectious Disease Spread

If you decide to own a pet, it is your responsibility to take care of that pet. There is more to be responsible for a pet than making sure it is fed and gets let out to use the bathroom though. Pets are likely to get infectious diseases if they aren't properly taken care of. That means that they can spread those infectious diseases to other animals and even to humans. It is very important that pet owners take on the full responsibility of their pets in order to make sure that these diseases aren't spread unnecessarily.

The main thing that you should consider when deciding to purchase a pet is the fact that shots are expensive. This is true for pets such as dogs and cats especially. Make sure that your pets have the proper immunizations to make sure that infectious diseases won't spread. For instance, a dog has a set time that he/she has to have rabies shots by. Not all pet owners take the time to get this very important shot for their pets though. If the dog is bitten by another animal that has rabies, he/she can then get the disease and it begins to spread even further. Rabies is a deadly disease and it drives animals wild even when they are tame pets by nature. That puts you, your family and the rest of society at risk.

There are enough infectious diseases spreading around without adding to the problem. Dogs, cats and other animals need to have all the immunizations for the same reasons that humans need to make sure they have their immunizations. You put your pets at risk with their health when you don't make sure that they are immunized and you put society as a whole at risk as well. It just doesn't make good sense not to get your pets immunized.

Other important factors in making sure you do your part in keeping your pet from spreading any infectious diseases is to make sure that they are bathed, aren't roaming about the countryside without you, aren't into trash cans and that you keep them away from other animals that could be potentially dangerous for them to be around. Don't let your pets run wild around town. Keep them within close proximity of your home and be careful of other animals coming into the yard when your pet is outdoors. If possible, chase away stray animals to make sure they don't pose a threat to your pet or your family.

Infectious diseases have taken a huge rise in numbers over the past couple of years. The most noted is the H1N1 Virus that had the world in a panic. That wasn't spread by a pet, but it was easy enough to begin a spread. It doesn't matter where an infectious disease begins, it should never begin with your pet. Keep it under control, be a responsible pet owner and do the right thing. If you can't afford to make sure that your pet is safe and as well as the people around you, it is better if you wait to get a pet until you can afford one.
