What Do Medical Professionals Think About Detox Diets and Colon Cleansing?

There are some serious considerations to take into account before adopting a body cleansing program. Colon cleansing and detox diets have gained in popularity as ways of ridding the body of harmful toxins. Anyone thinking of going this route should consider the negative side effects of these programs before making a final decision to detox.

Detox diets have been developed to cleanse the human body of toxins. These diets minimize the amount of chemicals ingested by promoting the intake of organic foods, raw fruits, vegetables, whole grains and drinking lots of water. The idea is to cut out processed foods, canned foods, sugars, fats, deep fried food, red meat, alcohol and caffeine. Some of these detox diets also promote the taking of dietary supplements to aid in the cleansing process.

One needs to take into consideration that doctors do not agree that toxins stay in our bodies. There is scientific evidence to show that the body flushes out toxins naturally. Harmful chemicals are broken down in the liver and then released through the kidneys.

Doctors approach these diets with caution as they could lead to a serious nutrient deficiency. If there is a lack of adequate nutrients, the body is forced to tap into the reserves of fat and protein that can be found in the muscles. This leads to a degeneration of muscle tissue.

Doctors don't discount the fact that people on detox diets can lose weight rapidly but maintain that it is not healthy weight loss. The weight lost during a detox program will be regained once the program is stopped. Doctors agree that these kinds of diets are not a healthy, long-term solution. People following a detox diet over a long period of time can have serious health issues. Currently, there is no scientific reason to believe that our bodies need help detoxifying. There are several organs responsible for cleansing our blood and gut.

Colon cleansing became popular many, many generations ago in Ancient Greece. They believed that one could improve overall health by cleansing the colon of fecal debris and toxins. These beliefs are still evident today. Many people have tried colon cleansing as a means of boosting energy levels and improving the body's immune system. Some people have tried colon cleansing as a way of losing weight.

A serious consideration one should take into account is the fact that the colon has valuable bacteria that actually help it to function properly. The colon sheds its skin (cells) every three or four days in order to avoid the accumulation of harmful waste. If you remove this bacterium you can disrupt the colon's ability to shed and therefore generate new cells. Colon cleansing can also lead to dehydration as well as vitamin deficiency.

Doctors have similar concerns about colonics as they do for detox diets. The body has a natural ability to detoxify. It does not need any additional help. Unnatural cleansing could upset the natural and delicate balance that exists in our bodies.

It is important to take the abovementioned considerations into account when investigating or adopting a body cleansing program.
