Important Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Questions to Ask Yourself

Jennifer Ledbetter
Cosmetic plastic surgery has become common and is promoted as the new "easy fix" for anything, large or small, that women don't like about their bodies. These cosmetic surgeries are portrayed as simple procedures that can dramatically change your life. Television and other media have gone as far as to give the impression that one can go to sleep and wake up with perfect, new breasts or a bikini-ready flat stomach... and a whole different life due to the new physical changes that were acquired under the knife.

Before making the decision to have cosmetic plastic surgery, set aside some quiet time by yourself to ask yourself the following questions.

Am I willing to Risk My Life to Change This Part of My Body?

Fact is, cosmetic plastic surgery is still surgery and all surgery carries certain risks. Complications can occur even with the best surgeon. These complications are not usually a result of the cutting, sewing, and altering of your body, but rather are caused by the anesthesia. It is worth your time, no matter how badly you'd like bigger breasts, to ask yourself if you are willing to risk your life to have those breasts.

What Changes Do I Really Expect From This Cosmetic Surgery?

Yes, cosmetic plastic surgery can alter your outside and change what you see when you look at yourself. However, cosmetic surgery does not change how you feel about yourself. If your reason to have cosmetic surgery involves believing that this surgery will give you more confidence or make your life better, it's time to really think further into this decision. It is imperative to make sure your expectations from your surgery are realistic and involve only a changed body. The only thing that can really change your life - is you.

Am I Prepared For The Reality of My Recovery Period?

To be blunt, recovery from cosmetic plastic surgery sucks. You will hurt and you will not look the way you thought you'd look. Scarring, bruising, and swelling are all common after-effects from cosmetic plastic surgery. Your body will have just went through a very traumatic event and it will take time - maybe as long as six months - to see the final result of your cosmetic surgery.

What If I Need a Second Surgery to Correct My First Cosmetic Plastic Surgery?

Yes, this can happen. It is not uncommon for cosmetic surgery to not turn out as expected and a second surgery is needed to either correct the first, or "fine tune" it. The need for a second surgery can be an emotional bomb and can also be a drain on your finances.

Do I Realize That Most Results of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery are not Permanent?

A breast enlargement will make your breasts larger, but it will not stop the effect of time, weight gain or loss, and gravity. Liposuction requires you being committed to diet and exercise to maintain your weight or else the benefits of the surgical procedure will be lost. Simple and natural aging will still take it's toll on your surgically altered body - keep that in mind.

Am I Prepared Financially to Pay for This Surgery?

Cosmetic plastic surgery is NOT cheap and in most cases, will not be covered by your health insurance. Do you have the thousands of dollars available to pay up-front for your surgery? If not, how are you planning to pay for your cosmetic surgery, finance it? Do you really want to be in debt for years just to have bigger boobs or a flatter tummy? Is it worth it to you to give up your financial option to enjoy life just so you can look better?

Taking the time to ask yourself these questions can go a long way with your ultimate decision to have, or not to have, cosmetic plastic surgery. Make sure that the answers you give are actually your answers and not what you feel others want you to say. The only person you should consider having cosmetic plastic surgery for is for YOU.
