Important Debit Card and ATM Safety Tips

You never want to go to an ATM without reading these safety tips. Let's face it, sometimes there are emergencies when we need to pull out cash after bank hours, and the only location is a poorly lit, walk up ATM. When you approach an ATM, you should follow these helpful tips to ensure you are safe.

If it is the evening, please pay attention to what is around you. Be very reluctant to use a walk-up ATM in the evening, especially if you are in a secluded area. If you must use a walk-up, park close to the ATM and in a lit area. Before you exit your vehicle, make sure you have your card, envelopes (in case of deposit) and whatever else you need ready to go. You want to be prepared to make the transaction before you exit your vehicle. If you notice anyone or anything acting suspicious, it will be best to cancel and leave the area as quickly as possible. If you feel there is suspicious activity, call 911 immediately.

Your best option is to use a drive-up ATM or one inside the gas station. Walk in, and guard the ATM machine as to where the people around you cannot see the screen. Once you complete your transaction and receive your money, place in your pocket or wallet immediately and return to your vehicle. Count the money when you return to your car or when you return home. Never leave your receipt at the ATM. There are usually trash cans next to the machines where you can tear up and throw out.

If you use a debit/ATM card to make purchases, be sure to place your body in front of the keypad while you are entering your PIN. Memorize your PIN and never give it out to anyone. In almost every case, the bank does not even know your PIN so they will not call you and ask for it in any case. Be sure that you have received your card back before you leave the register once you have completed your purchase. Before you sign your slip, make sure the correct amount is charged. If there is a line for a TIP, make sure you cross that out, or fill it in. You want to make sure ALL totals are correct before you sign. If the slip is blank, do not sign it.

If you should lose your ATM or Debit card, make sure you report it lost or stolen immeditately. It is best practice to keep a log of all bank telephone numbers you need handy just in case your wallet should get stolen. That way, you have all of the information right at your fingertips if you need to report the cards lost/stolen. Do not give out your card numbers or PINs to anyone. Never write them on your cards or keep in your wallet. Follow each of these tips when using your debit or ATM cards to ensure you are keeping them safe, and you are doing everything you can to avoid a situation.
