Whether you are planning to spend one day, or a week in the city, there are many opportunities for tourists. If you are coming from Oslo, I would strongly recommend taking the train across the country. You'll get to sit in comfortable seats and watch some of the fantastic variety in scenery as the train chugs along. Be sure to get a map of Norway, as well as a map of Bergen so you can keep track of where you are.
You should definitely check the weather report, so you can avoid being trapped inside because of rain. Anyway, be sure to bring a rain coat and/or an umbrella, because chances are you'll run into rain. If you rent a car be very careful. The roads are narrow, often with steep cliffs on one side, and many foreign drivers keep in the middle of the road of fear from the steep hills on their side. Also remember to keep the lowest possible gear in steep, downhill roads to avoid using all the brake fluid.
You should also prepare yourself for many tunnels, many of which have no lighting. This can be a scary experience if you are not used to it. No matter what, be sure to have to number to roadside assistance ready just in case.
Look for a tourist information office, where you can get tips on activities that every party member will enjoy. Whether you're interested in museums, hiking trails, ferry rides, or tourist attractions, the Bergen tourist information can help. A tourist handbook of Bergen can also be a good idea, as you can read background information on places you visit.
If you go outside of the popular tourist season you can often find discounted hotels in Bergen. Hotels in Norway keep good standards, so be prepared to spend a good lump of money on accommodation. You should absolutely make reservation on forehand. Cabins are much less expensive and most keep a decent standard. Make sure that you will not have to bring your own sheets.
Restaurants in Bergen have delicious sea food as well as traditional dishes. Norway is an expensive country to visit, so once again be prepared for a big difference in prices compared to the states.
With a little planning Bergen is an absolutely great place for a vacation in Norway. Be sure to bring a camera, because the scenery is astonishing!

Post a CommentI've never left the U.S. for a variety of reasons. I can imagine the beauty of Norway must be very great. I think if I had my d'ruthers, I'd like the Mediterranean for climate and for diet.
