1. Ground Yourself
When I say, "ground yourself" I don't mean go to your room. I mean that you need to get rid of a computers worst nightmare, Static Electricity. To ground yourself, you will need to touch a bare piece of metal, such as the inside of the computer case. After you do this, you don't have to worry as long as you don't move your feet. If you move your feet, you must re-ground yourself to get rid of the static electricity you now have collected. There are easier and more efficient ways to do this though. There are anti-static gloves, wrist straps, and even mats that will save you the time of re-grounding yourself, simply put the clamp from the device on the case. Once your grounded, you can proceed to fixing your computer
2. Have all of your parts ready before you begin
I cannot stress how many times I was building or fixing a computer when I realized I had missing or wrong parts. This step is especially important if you live far away from the computer part supply store. This step will save you lots of confusion, money, and will make the whole process go a lot smoother.
3. Read the Manuals
The people that make the products didn't write those bulky books for no reason, so use them. Although you think you may know everything there is to possibly to know about the product, I can assure you, you don't. Reading the manual doesn't make you look stupid or not manly, it proves you're responsible because your making an effort to do things right the first time around. If you don't read it, you could end up looking like a fool when your machine doesn't turn back on, just because you couldn't spare ten minutes.
4. Don't be afraid to ask for help
Computers can be very expensive pieces of machinery. If you aren't sure, call for help. Call a friend, family, even a technician. It will all be worth it in the end because now you have a working machine instead of just breaking one. You probably don't realize how quickly things can go wrong; so when you first think something is going wrong, don't be afraid to ask!
5. Have fun
Fixing and building a computer isn't supposed to be a dreaded task. It is meant to make you feel happy that you accomplished something, or did the right thing by calling for help. If you do all of the things mentioned above, fixing computers can even be a fun hobby. Remember to ground yourself, have all your parts, read the manuals, have back-up ready, and most importantly, have fun!
I hope you learned a lot from this article and have changed your views on asking for help and reading manuals. I will be writing more articles soon, so please check back for more.
Thanks for your time!
