I found that a few of my ancestors were involved in very historic events. I found out that some of my distant relatives were involved in the civil war. I learned that my ancestors had a part in fighting slavery. I think this is a very important lesson to learn because I feel very proud that people that were related to me had such a huge impact on history. If I didn't research my family tree and my lineage I would have never known how much of an impact my ancestors made.
When researching my ancestry I learned that quite a few people in my family have died or had different types of cancer. This is important to me, so that I can evaluate my risk for cancer. They now have a test that if you are at a high risk of breast cancer you can find out if you carry the gene. For me knowing what family members had cancer, and what forms of cancer makes me understand my risks better.
It is very important for kids to know where they come from. It gives kids a sense of pride to know that they ancestors were part of events in history. I learned that kids are more willing to learn about history when it is real to them. My kids love to hear about how things in history affected their ancestors. It seems amazing to them that people that they were related to played a part in history.
My great grandmother died when I was very young so I never got to know her, but when I researched my family tree I found out a lot of interesting facts about my grandmother. It was nice getting to know all these things about her that otherwise I would have never known. I feel that in a way I have formed a more special relationship with her by knowing these things. Seeing my grandmother in a different light, and seeing the things that she accomplished when she was younger made me see what kind of person she was.
I think the most important lesson that I learned is also the most simple, I learned where I came from. Before when someone asked me a question about my family tree or genealogy I never really knew the answer. I now know when my ancestors traveled to America. I also know how we got our last name. It means a lot to me to know why things happened, and to understand where I came from.
No matter what the reason you decide to research your genealogy, it will be a fun experience. There is no right or wrong reason to start a family tree and to start finding out about your ancestors. The important part is that you made the decision to find out more about your lineage.
