Important Tools for Arborsculpture

FlutterBy
Arborsculpture is a type of earth-art. Arborsculpturist shape trees, plants and shrubs into works of art. They take great care not to harm the plant. The finished product can take years to complete because the tree, plant or shrub must grow into the shape it was molded for. Some projects could take 10 years or more to complete. Popular shapes would include chairs, people, animals and doorways. The process begins by selecting the type of tree or plant that you want. Then you bend the branches and the trunk to grow in a certain shape. Adjustments are made over time to produce the finished look.

Arborsculpture is different than other types of eco-art. It uses mainly the tree trunk and not the foliage to shape the tree. Topiary is the art of producing shapes with the foliage of a plant. Bonsai art is growing the bonsai tree in which you prune and use a wire to shape the branches.

The tools used in arborsculpture are pruning shears, pruning saws, rope, string, tape and wire. You will use different tools depending on the type and size of plant you chose. A tree will require rope or wire to produce the desired shape you want. It is also common to use ropes anchored to the ground with stakes to hold larger trees in place. Smaller plants, such as bushes and shrubs, might only require tape or string. The pruning shears are an essential tool no matter what type of plant you have. A pruning saw would not be necessary for smaller plants. You could purchase a bonsai tool kit and find it useful.

Take care of the tools like you would with normal garden equipment. Wipe and clean them after each use. Do not let any moisture sit on them for too long or they will rust. Consider buying a sharpener for the blades to ensure an even cut which won't damage the tree or plant. Use WD-40 or a similar oil to keep parts lubricated. Dish soap and water is a gentle cleaner to wash away dirt and keep tools clean.

There a many good choices to chose from while picking a tree, plant or shrub to use for arborsculpture. These include the cherry tree, bonsai, apple tree, hindu-pan, pom-pom, lemon tree, ash, scarlet firethorn, Canadian hemlock and English yew. The rosemary plant is great to practice with and can also be grown in a container.
