Importing and Exporting in Japan

Food Restrictions, Other Goods and Documents

Japan produces a lot of products which are easy to import into the United States. Automobiles, motorcycles, musical instruments, are just a few examples of items made in Japan. However, Japan does have some pretty strong restrictions when it comes to exporting food items, live animals, drugs, and guns. Japanese customs will require exporters show proper paper work before allowing shipments to leave Japan.

Food Items

If you are planning to import authentic Kobe beef from Japan or Duck for a Japanese restaurant you may want to reconsider. Japanese customs officials do not allow most meats to be exported. The meats not allowed include beef, lamb, goat, dogs, rabbits and horses. Horses and dogs may not be normal menu items in the United States but in other areas they could be on the menu. Poultry such as turkey, geese, and duck are also prohibited. Other meat related products such as eggs and horns are not allowed to be exported to other countries.

Other Items

Live animals would need health certificates in order to be exported out of Japan. One can not legally ship narcotics out of Japan. Customs in the United States would also frown on those shipments as well. Guns and ammunition are not allowed to be exported out of Japan. Importing firearms and ammunition is also a difficult task. Articles, magazines, and videos which are considered obscene are not allowed to be shipped out of Japan. Obscene is determined by the Japanese government officials. It would probably be best to keep most exports G rated.

Documents Needed

Japan like most countries requires customs to see the proper documents before goods are shipped. Likewise, United States Customs people will require proper documents to allow the Japanese products to be imported. In order to export products out of Japan one would need export declaration otherwise known as Japanese custom form C-5010. Customs will need to see a copy of the invoice. They will also need to see all supporting documents such as certifications, various approvals and required permits.
