Importing the Terroristic Threat - How Would We Survive?

Randy Jones
I was doing some shopping the other day and as I walked through the store I became seemingly terrified at what I was looking at. Five out of every seven items I picked up was starting to tell me a story that was really making me stop and think. As I read the labels on these items it seemed out of seven items five were produced or made some where other than the United States.

Something inside me kinda sunk as one thought came to mind. What if you picked up an item made in China and suddenly everything in the store your home or your daily life that was made in China simply vanished. How empty would everything be. Then I thought what if everything made in Japan vanished or Mexico or even worse the middle east.

Whether we care to admit it or not we as Americans have became very dependent on imports to make our very survival in everyday life. Why has the happened one might ask. Over the past thirty years we have become very dependent on searching for the lowest price with quality products. Retail chains have been around for sometime but within the past several years many more have sprung up across the nation as our population has grown and with this growth comes a stronger demand for larger households and smaller economics. The large retail chains see this as a chance to increase profit margins so they import to keep cost down on their end while providing lower retail to the public demand. Some items have merely become an issue of technology and the lack of it in certain areas of our culture so we rely on a lot of the items such as electronics to be imported from other Nations around the world.

The thing that scares me the most over this merger of American retail and imports is this. What if these countries we have come so dependent upon simply said we have had enough of America and we would like to impose an embargo to stop shipping our products to them. Here are just a couple of items I would notice missing. My car,my television,my bed, most of my household furniture and lets not forget the good ol 87 octane found at most local gas stations. In short my daily life would be crippled by the affect of such an embargo.

If you speak with any recovered addict recovering from almost anything they will tell you that it takes years to stop certain cravings because they are dependencies. The truth is we as a nation have become addicts of importing reliance. Now to our defense some has come at the Government's discretion due to a little brain storm known as outsourcing. Which has cost jobs inside the U.S. and made a larger increase for these out of work families to search for a cheaper way of life. I guess in thinking, one of the largest attacks on this country could come simply in the form of our suppliers saying to us we do not need you anymore.
