Impotence and Heart Attacks; Why Inability to Get an Erection Could Mean Cardiac Problems

Lack of Erection May Save Lives

There is now quite a bit of evidence to suggest a strong link between impotence and cardiac problems. In fact it now seems that men who have known cardiovascular problems and who also have difficulties developing an erection may have twice the risk of suffering a heart attack. It also means that impotence may act as a warning sign of potential trouble ahead. It is believed that about half of all men will experience problems with getting an erection at least once after they reach middle-age; this does not mean that they will all have heart attacks.

What is the Connection between Impotence and Heart Attacks?

A frequent cause for impotence is poor circulation through the arteries in the penis. A normal erection occurs when men become sexually stimulated and the brain signals the penis to harden; this causes blood to rush to the penis and makes it stiff. Anything that interferes with normal circulation of blood can prevent an erection; this is why heart problems and impotence are related.

A study in Germany has just provided more evidence of how closely impotence and heart attacks are related. This research involved 1,519 participants who were known to have heart problems already. This study showed that those men who had impotence were at far great risk of a heart attack and of consequently dying. The group who suffered with impotence were also more likely to suffer heart failure or a stroke.

The Implications of Connection between Impotence and Heart Attacks

Failure to get an erection should not make men worried that they are about to have a heart attack, but persistent impotence may indicate that arteries are narrowing and this should be checked out. Men can feel a bit embarrassed about discussing this type of problem with a doctor, but it is important information and should be divulged. Some men may begin medication to help with their erection problems, but this can mask their continued cardiovascular problems.

The link between impotence and heart attacks is now causing a lot of debate among medical professionals and there is talk of making this a regular screening assessment for men over forty. If erection problems that are due to cardiac problems are spotted early enough they may save lives.
