Impress Your Boss the Right Way: Don't Be a Butt Kisser

Krissy T.
Hard work, respect and a good attitude can take you places in a workplace. Impressing your boss is not an easy task, but it is essential for your success. I'm not saying you need to kiss up to you boss, I'm saying that you need to leave your boss with a lasting impression whenever possible.

Always try to remain positive. In stressful situations you boss is expected to keep a positive attitude, and would expect the same from you. Show him you can handle yourself under pressure. Avoid approaching your boss about petty gripes as well and he'll hold you in a higher esteem. If there is something you must go complain about, be sure that you approach him with some positive points as well. It will keep you from looking like a "Betty Downer".

Your boss is your boss for a reason, and he will easily spot when you are being insincere. Do not try to overload your boss with flattery and express an interest in his family or outside of work activities all of the sudden. He is going to think you are up to something, or are expecting something in return. If your evaluation times is rolling around, do not try to pile on the work just to show you can handle it. Your boss will be happy in you are consistent in your work and honest all the time.

If something comes up at work, or there is a problem that you know you will need to speak with your boss about, make sure that you come up with a few solutions on your own. Your boss may have a solution of his own, but he will appreciate the fact that you tried to resolve the issue first before consulting with him. Not to mention it will show him that you have excellent problem solving skills.

When approaching your boss, be respectful. Your boss may be very busy at the time or on a conference call or video seminar, you never know. It is best to start by asking "is the a good time?" before you just barge in to speak with him. If the issue is not something that needs to be resolved right away, send your boss an email or write a note and stick on his desk. He will appreciate that you are not pushing him and possibly be impressed.

The easiest way to impress your boss is by finishing tasks and assignments on time or early. If you deliver quality in a timely manner your boss is sure to be impressed.

Most importantly, remember that you boss has feelings too. Saying a simple "thanks" once in a while can truly go a long way. Employees get recognition all the time typically, but very rarely does someone stop the thank the boss for a job well done. I am sure you're boss would appreciate it every now and then, just remember what I said about kissing up. Don't go overboard.
