Improve Your Energy Efficiency at Home to Reduce Your Energy Bill

Now more than ever before, prices are climbing out of reach. Energy, groceries, and gas have become more expensive over the last few years, so it is important to know how you can save money in any way you can. One way in which you can save money is by reducing your energy bill by making your home and your habits more energy efficient.

Probably you have seen the symbol "Energy Star" in some appliances; from refrigerators to computer monitors. The Energy Star program was created by the EPA and the DOE in the United States and its goal is to inform the consumer which products use electricity more efficiently. Energy Star products can consume up to 30% less energy than regular appliances doing the same job, so it is a factor worth of consideration. There is wide variety in appliances having this symbol, so regardless of what you look for, you are going to find an Energy Star product for your needs.

The most energy-draining appliance we have in our homes is the AC unit. Heating or cooling our entire house requires a lot of electricity, and the effect of this can be seen in your energy bill. A house without proper insulation will require a lot more electricity because your AC unit will be fighting constantly against the outside weather, but you can improve your home insulation in several ways.

One is to have a professional check your home and insulate it properly for you, but if you are not willing to pay, you can still do something. Inspect your house for any cracks, and holes and repair them so air won't leak out. Check the state of your insulation in your ceiling and walls, and if it is too old or damaged, have it repaired. Also make sure the conducts of your AC unit are well insulated.

Your windows are very bad insulators, and even when they are closed, they let a big amount of heat or cold to enter the house. Recently there have been developments in the windows industry and now you can buy energy efficient windows at a reasonable price. Some have double glass with air caught in between (air is a very good insulator), or are made of different materials. If you are not willing to change your windows or want to improve your insulation even more, you can use blinds or shutters to reduce the amount of heat going into your home.

Use fans to help the fresh air of the AC unit circulate better. Fans don't require a lot of energy and will share the burden of the AC unit. Also try to get energy efficient lights. They are more expensive but they last over 10 times more and use over 60% less energy, so they are a great investment.
