Improve Your English Writing Style

Roger C.
Many writers struggle with their writing because they feel their English skills seem dull, simple or just plain boring. The good news is that everyone can improve on this and it isn't as hard as it seems. By simply adding a few decorative adjectives to your sentence, you can make it look fuller and more flowery; following are some of the ingredients you can use to spice up your English.

However, you shouldn't overuse adjectives. Adding too many adjectives to a sentence won't help to add more detail or make it fuller; instead, it will slow down its flow and will make your sentences feel amateurish. A good example of this concept would be the sentence: The magical way in which he played the strings was unbelievably beautiful. Here the adjectives used were magical and unbelievably.

The use of alliteration is another tool you can use to make your sentences sound more expressive. Correct alliteration consists in repeating in two or three occasions the first consonant sound in a phrase. It might sound complicated but it is fairly simple. An example of alliteration could be: dancing dolphins, or flowers fully flourishing.

You may also use acronyms. They are a correct and acceptable way t shorten names and make your phrases more efficient, but you must be aware that you should only use widely known and recognizable acronyms, otherwise you take the risk of confusing your readers.

A great method to make your language appear more effective and polished is to include the use of analogies in your work. An analogy consists in explaining a situation by using an alternative situation that has a meaning related to the first. It is a means to illustrate a point in a creative way that could result easier to understand or more inspiring depending on the goal of the analogy. An example of an analogy could be: The noise was so terrible that it felt like a drill going into my brain.

Be aware that is up to you to limit to the use of all these techniques. If you use them too often you might appear as an even more inexperienced writer. Use them only when the context is right and if they add some value to the overall writing style and think of them as species such as garlic or pepper; they add more flavor to your meal, but if you use too much your food is ruined.
