Over the years computer technology has progressed greatly and hard drives are no exception. Hard drive speeds have increased along with their capacity. Although all this change has taken place the hard drive of today is still not perfect. The hard drive can still create a mess dealing with your every day creating, modifying, and deleting of files. Doing all these things to files causes them to become fragmented. This means that the file is not stored in one place, which causes your hard drive's performance to decrease as it has to search for all the pieces in different locations. The "Disk Defragmenter" program is designed to take all these fragmented pieces of files and put them together and make it easier for your hard drive to find them.
The "Disk Defragmenter" program can be started following any of these sets of steps:
Option 1:
- Click on your "Start Menu"
- Go to "All Programs"
- Then go to "Accessories"
- Next go to "System Tools"
- Click on "Disk Defragmenter"
Option 2:
- Click on your "Start Menu"
- Click on "Run"
- Then type "dfrg.msc" in the open text box
- Click "Ok"
Option 3:
- Click on your "Start Menu"
- Then click on "My Computer"
- Next go to the drive you desire to Defragment and right-click on it
- Then click on properties
- Click on the "Tools" tab in the properties window
- Then click on the "Defragment Now" button.
When the "Disk Defragmenter" program opens, there will be a list of drives displaying in a downward sequence from the top of the program's open window. Next, select which drive is desired for defragmentation (usually C: is the best choice since it is the most used). When the drive is selected the program shows an illustration of the estimated disk usage before defragmentation. Then, once the drive is selected, click the "Defragment" button at the bottom of the program box.
Once the program begins you will see the illustration of estimated disk usage after defragmentation will begin to change and you will see a progress bar at the bottom giving a percentage of completion.
When the defragmentation is done a pop-up will appear saying "Defragmentation is complete for: (Selected drive)" Then click the close button and the "X" at the top-right of the program to close it. Running this program weekly will maximize the performance of your hard drive (or hard drives) and keep your computer running up to speed.
