The first and most important shot is the serve. At the higher level or professional level of ping pong the player is required to throw the ball into the air before making contact. However when playing a normal recreational game, or just learning, a simple service from the hand should do just fine. As you progress in the game you will begin to learn many different serves, and understand how to put different spins on the ball, and how these spins will affect not only the ball, but also your opponent.
As you are learning your serve, you will need to work on different shots to help progress your entire game. The first and most important shot is the forehand. For any beginning player, the sole idea is to simply get the ball over the net and on the table using their forehand. Once you become a better player you will learn how to put different spin on the ball. For example you will learn how to put topspin on the ball which causes the ball to drop at a rapid rate, thus giving you the ability to hit the ball harder. You will also learn how to do just the opposite, by putting backspin on the ball, which makes the ball float a little more so you will have to hit it a little softer. However if you are playing against a player that likes to hit many topspin shots then a backspin shot can be very effective. The first reason being that the ball will have a different type of bounce than usual, making a hard topspin shot difficult. The ball will also still have backspin on the ball causing it to drop into the net if your opponent is not careful with their shot.
The next shot that is vital to any good ping pong player's arsenal is the backhand. The main reason for this is that any good player will continue to hit the ball to your backhand, because that is obviously going to be the side where you are least likely to hit a great shot. Backhands can be very dangerous, if you learn how to effectively use them. Just like every other shot you can put spin on the backhand. Once you learn to hit the backhand with the type of effectiveness that you have with your forehand, you will be an extremely dangerous player.
Ping pong is an excellent recreational game that just like every other sport or game, requires you to practice if you plan on getting any better. There are three main shots in the game of ping pong which are the serve, the forehand, and the backhand. As a progressing player you will learn how to put different spin on all three of the shots I mentioned, which will help you become an excellent player. The way to becoming an amazing player, is the ability to hit all three shots with the same effectiveness.
