I used to have a speech impediment. Since I was in the first grade, I had to take speech classes to help me with my grammar because I couldn't, at that time, grab the understanding of proper English like most children. When I got in high school, I still had a problem with my speech but the more I read, the better my speech became. By learning how to read more proficiently in College, it helped me to pay closer attention to the way the writers wrote and use words. This helped me a great deal. Now I really don't have any problems with my speech. However, if I feel like my speech is wavering, I would pick up a book.
Reading helps you to use proper English. If you just read a chapter or two a day, it can help your grammar enhance just by paying attention to the way the author writes when she or he is writing a paragraph explaining past or present or future events in his or her story. We talk every day. Therefore, it is crucial to pay attention to the conversations between characters in every story that you read. When you are reading, look at the words that the characters are using when they are asking a question or when they are expressing themselves. This would also help your grammar.
Your vocabulary can increase greatly by reading. Most of us, when we are reading, we would not know every single word that is in our book. By highlighting the words you don't know and writing the meaning by the word would help increase your vocabulary. So, if you ever decide to read the same book again, you would already have the meaning next to it. By your vocabulary increasing by reading, you can find a lot of unique words that you can use in your every day conversations by making them your own words. By learning one word a day can help you understand what you are reading to help you not get frustrated when you are reading, which would make a person not want to read. Vocabulary is like a code that you have to unlock in order to be a successful reader.
Reading can also help you to critically think. It would be great to annotate when you are reading. I do this mostly all the time when I feel like there was something that was mention in a story that made a good point or when I am trying to find out who is the killer in a story. It helps me to feel like I am a part of the story. Just like a detective, I would scrutinize everything that seems to lead me to an answer in the books I read. As a result of annotating, I get a full understanding in what I read. Because reading can help you critically think, it can help you critically think in the everyday life by helping you make the right decisions before you do so something you would regret.
Reading can be a great affect on your writing skills. Just by reading, it can give you some ideas in the way you can write. There are authors who write mysteriously to keep you wanting to find the next clue. Some write horror books with great detail of someone getting killed or some write very fancy stories. By reading, you can get ideas in the way you want to write your narrative, descriptive, and persuasive papers. In all there are many ways we can write, and reading can help you get your ideas for all the type of writing you can possibly do.
One reason why people don't like to read is because they feel like they can get their information from other sources. I used to have a friend who thought like this. She thought that if she watches the Discovery channel or go to the museums or be around others who have lot of information on everyday life situations, she would have all the information she possibly need. However, if she would read, she would have more information than what she saw on TV or from other people who had to get their information some where else too. She was limited. You can only go so far with what you know on TV or the museums and with others in a group talking because just watching TV, going to the museums and listening to other people's opinions and views in a conversation can sometimes be down fall. Why? There can be a limit amount of information than what you can get in a book.
When you read, you can get more profound information and go to more than one source to get the information you need. On a TV program, at museums or in a conversation, there is a limit time span to explain what you need to know. By reading, you can get your information at any time on the internet or in books, and there is an unlimited amount of time to get it if you make time.
Some people don't read because they don't have the time to read. My former uncle is like this. He claims that because he has so much activity going on in his life, he doesn't have time to read. However, he is an early bird; he gets up very early in the morning. This would be a perfect time to make time to read. No matter what you are doing, there is time where you can read. For example, you can read on your lunch break at work instead of making conversations every day with your associates at work. You can read while you are cooking foods that take some time to get ready. You can read at a restaurant while you are waiting for you food. There are several other times when you can take a break and read. You just have to put some effort to make time.
Finally, there are people who don't like to read at all. Even though you don't like to read, you such at least try to see if you like to read. I know some people who don't like to read because of personal reason such as reading too slow or too fast or got made fun in school because they couldn't pronounce a certain word or any other personal reason. Some people I know don't like to read because they can't sit in one place for a long time. What ever the reason is, you should try to read just by reading a chapter a day or one page to start with because there are some really good books and information out in the world that can make help you or entertain you. You would have to read one way or the other by researching information on the internet for a school project or going to a museum with exhibits that you would have to read the information in order for you to understand what you are viewing or at a job where your employer wants you to read an important document that has to do with your company.
If you don't like to read, it can be a disadvantage for you because in this world, it is a requirement for us to know how to read and know how to read effectively. You can get fired quickly at a job if you don't understand the tasks your boss gives you. You can do terribly on a test because you misunderstand a question.
Even though there are many reasons why you may not read, it still should be on your agenda. You should all ways make the time to read. It would help you a great deal in life. What can you loose? If you try at least to read, it can help you understand things that you didn't understand before. I have learned a lot since I have being reading. I know more about people and the way people think because I read a book about our personalities. Because I took the time to read even when I didn't have much time, my vocabulary had increase in a matter of seconds. I have three tips, one for each reason for not reading, that anyone can do to start reading. If you are a person that only likes to get your information from other sources than reading, you should still get a book to see if the other sources are correct or to get more information on whatever topic you are interested in at that time. For people that don't have time to read a whole book or nothing at all, you should make time even if it is five minutes or so.
Lastly, for people who don't like to read at all, you can find something you are interested in such as a hobby that you like to do or cartoons that you like to watch, or things you like to collect. Whatever it is, find something on it and go and get a book on it. You can find a lot of tips on how to collect and invest in your collecting, drawing tips, and anything else you are interested in. You would be surprise to how it can affect you.
To conclude, Reading should be in people's lives more. The more you read, the more advantage you can have in this world.
