There are many, if not more, available toys to not only entertain but also to promote open communication with a playmate or parent. A toy phone, for example, is almost impossible to play with by yourself. A child will want to have someone else on the other end to talk with making it a real telephone in their world. Play kitchen sets, with a stove, pots and pans and cooking utensils would be another good example.
There are many interactive DVD's and CD's available now that work well with getting kids to communicate since a response is required as the disc is played. There is also a good selection of play computers and voice recorders that children enjoy.
Coloring books, with markers, crayons and colored pencils keep the communication lines open as the child's artwork is discussed with a parent of sibling. And, as a child grows, activity books, such as fill in the blank, connect the dots and color by number add to the dialogue as well.
If a child seems to be having problems with communication skills, choosing toys that will only be fun by talking with others would be suggested. Of course, no toy will offer any kind of assistance if the child doesn't have someone to interact with. Without a parent or playmate to carry on a conversation with the toy won't get it's intended effect.
For little girls, a great choice for toys are dolls to stimulate communication. Playing house and dressing their dolls with other little girls takes them off to their pretend world of mama's and babies. Dress up costumes also keep little girls talking as they pretend to be a princess or a movie star.
For little boys, any kind of construction toy will usually get everyone talking. One has a dump truck and one has a loader. They have to use their communication skills to coordinate the loading and dumping of the dump truck. Any kind of lego or lincoln log sets are also good choices for boys imaginations to create their own buildings and towns for their trucks to drive through.
For children to be able to open the lines of communication, all they need is their imaginations and someone to share it with. Be it their friend, sibling or parent, if someone is there to hear it, children will communicate through the use of toys..
