Improving Hand-Eye Coordination

Techniques for Better Coordination

David Murff
Hand-eye coordination is a very important skill for anyone to have. It can be used in sports and at work. Many people have underdeveloped hand-eye coordination abilities. These people often think there is no way to change this; that they were just born with it. Well now is the time for change.

The first and usually best way to improve your coordination is by pursuing multiple sports. Ping pong and tennis are great for this due to the requirements of fast reflexes and watching the ball. Other sports good for improvement are football and basketball.

A way you can improve your hand-eye coordination through diet is by upping your zinc intake. Just 20 mg of zinc a day can improve your coordination, according to some studies. Some foods to stay a way from or decrease are whole grain bread and cereal. You will need to consult a doctor or physician before changing your diet.

One controversial but fun way to improve your coordination is through video games. Video games require you to use your hands and eyes to achieve a goal. At this time a heated debate has been going on over whether or not video games actually improve coordination. Many due believe in its positive effects, as long as you play in moderation.

Another easy way to improve coordination is through simply playing catch. Catch can drastically improve your hand-eye coordination when played regularly. Just toss a ball with a neighbor, friend, or relative whenever you get the chance. You can make it more difficult by tossing farther and harder. This technique produces positive effects almost every time.

A way to improve the eye side of hand-eye coordination is through connect four. This game requires eye movement and planning. It also changes the playing field rapidly causing you to take note of each new piece. Another easy way to improve your eyes is through focusing. If you focus on an object nearby then on an object far away then back and forth you can quickly improve your focusing speed. Focusing speed is vital to hand-eye coordination.

A final way to improve coordination is through wall ball. Stand in front of a wall and bounce a rubber ball or basketball off of it then catch it before it hits the ground. A more advanced version is writing letters or numbers on the ball and calling off the last number/letter you see before you catch it.

Through regular practice of these techniques you can quickly improve hand-eye coordination. These techniques will only take minutes a day but produce long term effects. It may seem harder to improve coordination as you grow older, but it is still possible.
