Improving Second Life Clothing, One Creation at a Time - The number of content creators who venture into virtual worlds with dreams of improving their art continues to grow daily. As a place to expand art skills, it is a wonderful place, but there are some very important considerations that should be taken into account when creating clothing for the virtual world to ensure the ability to obtain the final look that you want. Using this will allow you to improve your images, and make certain that you are getting the look that you want, without releasing clothing that is subpar and a bad reflection of you.

As a standard rule of thumb, it is a very good idea to spend a lot of time working on shading, seams, wrinkles and highlights. These are all aspects of clothing that are present in real life, and making them also present in the virtual versions of clothing can give them a much more realistic appearance, and make it a lot easier for you to obtain the type of final result that is going to create a great looking outfit.

It is also a good idea to take into account that you are going to need to work with the avatar mesh. Much as it may not be the best result possible, there are some limitations that it presents. Certain parts of the avatar will stretch the clothing, and could distort the overall look. Being aware of this, it is possible to make some adjustments to the overall design and even the fabric layout to help minimize this strange appearance. Utilizing an offline program to help you test how the clothing will look on the avatar mesh is a great way to help reduce the problems from it, while still getting a great idea of how it will look.

Always utilize test or temp uploads to compare to an actual avatar before finalizing any of the clothing. While the offline programs can be great for getting a good indication and idea of how the clothing will look, they are far from perfect. It is important that you look carefully at the overall appearance of the clothing in world. This allows you to double check seams, stretching, and even the overall look to ensure that it is a natural look that is exactly how you intended. You might need to make some final adjustments to get the right look in world and test or temp uploads is the best way to accomplish this.

By taking the time to carefully consider the limitations that are in place for virtual clothing, you will be quite happy to with the results of your work. Not taking these limitations into account can make it almost impossible to get the look that you want, but also make it complicated to correct after you are finished. If you are checking the work as you go along, it is possible to easily catch any mistakes or problems as they arise, rather than being left with a massive problem in the end.
