In the Garden

Jose Zuniga

I'm out of practice

in the fields of green

one might call Eden

I played soccer here

with Hector

and he said to me

'Pass on the Apples'

In the blink of an eye,

a fiery sword appeared

from within two fiery eyes

they said,

'take us out of your page!'

What does that mean,

to be out of place

in history?

Cortez was not there

but I see him follow Dante

downstairs somewhere

My brown skin

that Cortez marked

with an evil eye and sneer

he did not even turn

to me, he even

growled

I looked back to the

Arc-angel holding

the sword

while holding the tray

of apples in my hands,

I let them drop--

Dido jumped so quick

to catch one

and fog and fire swarmed my eyes.

Then, after it cleared,

all this mess came about

brining forth more people

Adam had to go

and Eve with him

Good--they cheated

Or so Odysseus

thinks as he

plays the sport to win

A loud echoing voice

from upstairs said,

"Go forth"

Thus, went I

and tripped

on Fortune

who happened

to have smiled on me

and my clumsiness

and aside from Her

stood Boethius, angry now,

"Hmmf! she never smiles at me!" claimed he.
