In His Dreams: An Exclusive Interview with G. Michael Gray on His Role in Supernatural's Dream a Little Dream of Me
G. Michael Gray who plays the role of Jeremy Frost in the Supernatural season three episode, Dream a Little Dream of Me (written by Sera Gamble), is very excited to have finally landed a guest spot on the show.
"According to my records this was the sixth time I had read for Supernatural," Gray tells us. "Each audition they would say I was great and then give the part to someone else. Lucky for me when I read for the character of Jeremy Frost I was a perfect fit and they said "no" to a bunch of other guys. Still, six auditions before booking a show isn't too bad. There are other shows I've read for a crazy number of times."
Numerous auditions aside, G. Michael Gray, who hails from Trail, British Columbia Canada, is an actor with a very impressive list of credits to his name, including many scifi genre shows such as Dark Angel, Tru Calling, Jeremiah and most recently Blood Ties and Pain Killer Jane. All of this experience with the world of supernatural type series made him a perfect choice to end up in a guest starring role on Supernatural as Jeremy Frost
Finally scoring a guest starring gig on Supernatural didn't come without its down side for Gray though who had to turn down a role in Smallville, which was another series he had been auditioning for.
"I think after reading for fifteen different characters on Smallville, I finally booked a part. But as irony would have it, I had to turn the role down because it conflicted with the shooting schedule for Supernatural."
The casting sides for the Supernatural episode Dream a Little Dream of Me described the character of Jeremy Frost as a sort of perpetual college kid/stoner type. I asked G. Michael Gray if would tell us in his own words what he thought was the motivations behind his character and the things Jeremy does to Sam and Dean Winchester in this episode.
"I think Jeremy's motivations are similar to a lot of us," Gray explains how he sees the character. "He loves what he has in life and would to do anything to protect it. He is like a big kid who never wants to grow up... but really, can you blame him?"
I asked G. Michael Gray what was the most challenging aspect he found about playing this role of character who has the almost 'Freddy Krueger' type ability to affect other people's dreams. Gray explains with a laugh that the real challenge didn't come from the role, but from behind the scenes with the cast and crew.
"The most challenging thing for me as an actor was to keep a straight face when the camera would role. Right until the last second before Steve Boyum (the director) would yell "action", Jared (Padalecki), Jensen (Ackles) and I would be cutting each other up, and even the crew got their licks in. It was a pretty comical atmosphere for such a dark show."
Gray says he totally enjoyed such being part of such a 'challenging' work environment on a series. That he totally enjoyed working with Ackles and Padalecki and found them to be very down to earth and came away with a rather unique, but positive impression of them as fellow actors.
"I worked mostly with Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Both of those guys were great, they even posed for cheesy pictures with my son and my Chihuahua. When I looked at the photos later I was shocked at how big these guys were. You could fit four of my heads inside one of theirs. They must have very large brains inside those gargantuan noggins."
Besides having fun on the set and getting the series leads to pose for cheesy photos with kids and dogs, I asked G. Michael Gray what else he enjoyed and what was the most satisfying for him working on Supernatural in the role of Jeremy Frost.
"Most satisfying thing... my trailer was bigger," Gray says and then goes on to explain that this might sound flaky but, that he has worked on series where he has been in some sketchy coffin sized trailers. "I have to say Supernatural made me feel like a star."
And what was the most fun?
"I must say I enjoyed mashing the stunt guys with a bat... a lot," Gray tells us with a wicked smile. "Sure, they were foamy bats but I must have destroyed four or five of them before the show was wrapped."
Since Supernatural is so based in myth and urban legend, I asked G. Michael Gray if there was anything he learned while filming this episode that struck him as really cool or interesting to find out.
"I was fascinated with the 'Colt' in the TV series. The scripture from Psalms 23:4 'I will fear no evil...' is cool. Unfortunately no one started busting caps in anyone asses in the episode I was filming... or will they? I don't want to ruin it."
With the episode Dream a Little Dream of Me being about dreams and nightmares, my final question to Gray was if he would share what his worst nightmare is with my readers.
"I used to have this recurring nightmare as a kid. It was of me crawling into a dirt hole, but slowly the hole would narrow to the point were I would get stuck. Then I'd try to turn around but couldn't. I don't know why I never just crawled backwards out of the hole but I sure would get worked up. I'd wake up crying and mom and dad would bring juice or milk and on a good day... cookies. It got to the point were I didn't mind the nightmare because the prizes were so good when I woke up. I also find that dreams that have fish in them are terrifying. The problem is when I wake up I still find fish very scary."
Outside of his appearance as Jeremy Frost in the upcoming Supernatural episode Dream a Little Dream of Me airing on the CW Network tomorrow night at 9PM EST, G. Michael Gray tells us that he has another project upcoming.
"I filmed my first lead in a feature called 'Silk Trees'. It was directed by first time director Jedidiah Burdick and produced by Evermore Pictures. We shot it in 2007 in rural Indiana. Keep your eyes peeled for it."

Wow! I just found this! I was in the movie Silk Trees with Michael. It was the one of the most fun things I have ever done. I am Tilda, but may be cut out of the film. How did you get this interview? I was doing a search for him because the movie is soon to be released. I write here too. small world! not smallville, ha.
It was kinda funny interview, thank you for sharing :D
This interview just reinforces the impression I have that Jensen and Jared really are great, down-to-earth guys.
Love hearing that about the 'brothers'. I have been waiting for this episode - well, it seems like ages, now.
I can't wait to see him in this show. Not going to say anything him being a hottie, either. Thanks so much for the insight!
