In Your Honor

A Letter Addressed to Those Lost on September 11, 2001

K. Jai Estes
Dear Friends, Dear Heroes,

Images surround us of a day we would rather forget. A day that began with life and happiness and ended in transition and disbelief.

From a city of vibrant strength to a peaceful rural countryside to the house of our country's defenders, time stopped and the world was forever changed.

Many tears have been shed for you and for us. Every emotion has been experienced. Mostly bad emotions but a few good ones too. Sadness, fear, pain, helplessness, anxiousness, love, relief, strength, hope. And those emotions are as strong today as they were on that dark morning.

Most of us never met you, but we feel as though we know you. We weren't with you when you were sacrificed by unforgiving foes, but from that point forward, we never stopped holding your hands.

Rest assured, you did not die in vain. We have become stronger as a nation since you said goodbye, but we never stopped thinking of you. You are in our thoughts everyday of the year, not just on yearly anniversaries. All you endured taught us how to take a stand and how to survive as individuals and as a nation.

You are our true heroes. There was never any doubt. We are very thankful for all you gave while you were here. Each of you blessed us with your own special gifts, and our gratitude flows lovingly to you. And for your generosity, your reward is eternal peace and unconditional love.

We all miss you and love you, and we keep you close in our hearts. You will always be remembered.

Love and peace,

Your Nation United as One

That horrible day taught us all a lot about life: how we need to treasure our loved ones every day, the transient nature of our normal status, and so much more. It goes much deeper than politics. Thanks.
