"In Lawton It's Wayne's Drive Inn": For a Great Burger in Lawton, Oklahoma

Local Drive in Keeps Generations of Customers Coming Back for 57 Years

"In Lawton It's Wayne's" and it has been for the last 57 years. Anyone who has ever lived in Lawton, Oklahoma or even just passed through, perhaps spending time at Ft. Sill, will tell you that there are no better burgers anywhere.

Wayne Abshere opened Wayne's Drive Inn in 1950. It was originally located on an alley and had a staff of two. As the years passed Wayne's grew to three locations. Two of the locations were eventually sold and the South Sheridan location in the heart of Lawton became the Wayne's that most of us grew up with.

The centralized location makes it the perfect place for cruising and on any weekend night a string of cars can be seen making a cruise through Wayne's, most of them stopping for a cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper or some chili cheese fries.

Wayne's is more than just a Lawton institution and a place to cruise. Food from the drive in has been appreciated by generations of Lawtonians and every day new generations are learning to love it.

The menu at Wayne's is wide ranging and has been added to over the years to accommodate changing tastes, but it always comes back to the burgers. Someone who doesn't know about the taste sensation that is Wayne's might look at you funny when you order a Sissy Burger, but you know what it is all about.

Steak fingers and Fish n' Chips are a specialty on the menu along with the steak sandwich, chili cheeseburger, and bacon cheeseburger and they are all delicious. The "old favorites" menu includes tater tots, chili cheese fries, French fries, and of course the world famous Wayne's onion ring. There are no words adequate enough to describe the delectability of these onion rings. To use a phrase that my grandmother might have used, the onion rings are so good they will make you stand up and slap your momma.

Fountain drinks at Wayne's are not to be missed either. Choose your favorite flavorings from cherry to vanilla to watermelon and more and spice up your soda any way you like. The more bizarre the combination, the better the drink. If you are in the mood for something creamier try a peanut butter shake or a Wayne's Wizzard with Oreo, Heath, M & M's, or Butterfinger.

As Lawton has grown to a city of more than 100,000 people, so too has Wayne's grown once again. Last year they opened a brand new location at 68th and Cache Road, in addition to the location at #7 South Sheridan, allowing west side citizens quick access to great food.

Both Wayne's Drive Inn locations are open Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. (yes, there are many people who won't head to work without their soda from Wayne's) until 11:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until midnight. They are closed on Sunday.

Even after 57 years "In Lawton It's Wayne's" and it always will be.

Wow, Wayne's! It sure brings back the memories of my time at Fort Sill in the 6th of the 16th Howitzer Battalion, and cruising through the streets of Lawton in my '65 Pontiac. Thanks for re-charging long lost cherished times off-post.
