This year has been eventful, both for the world and for myself. The world paid tribute to many celebrities who passed away this year. There were a large number of famous people who passed away this year, totally in at over five hundred according to Wikipedia. What death stands out the most? Obviously that of Michael Jackson, a generation now left in the first decade of the new millennium. It's sad to bid farewell to such a strong influence on our lives and millions his music has touched, regardless of what the media once made him out to be.
A large step in history was made here in the United States by swearing in the first Black President of the United States, a step that would have been considered impossible fifty years ago and is now seen as real. Many will criticize the man based solely on his political affiliation, but regardless of what one may think he has definitely made a change the world will never forget.
Movies have made advances, with the seven highest grossing films of the year entering the top fifty films of all time. Despite being in a recession, this shows people still want to get out of the house and get away from the reality we all face. Such is the nature of things.
For me personally, I went through a long year of testing and bizarre tests to prepare for the brain surgery I had on June 22nd, just over six months ago. It was long and rigorous, but I managed to make it through the surgery and survive, for the better I like to think.
As I sit in the first hour of 2010, I must say I'm looking forward to what will soon be. This year, like the many that came to pass, is sure to be one filled with events guaranteed to leave a mark on society as a whole. What those marks are no one can say, but I can easily see them being strong changes, and many for the better.
So as we look forward towards the coming unknown times, I took a passage from the E. E. Cummings poem i go to this window. Cummings has always been a favorite of mine for what seems to be nonlinear poetry that, in the end, brings forth a strong presence so easily forgotten. As we look "downward thousands of enormous dreams", maybe we can take time to realize what is done is done and move on to a new phase in life.
I've never been one for New Year's Resolutions. When I was 15 I made a resolution I have managed to keep ever since: Never make another New Year's Resolution. I just want to go through another year of being able to tell people, with all sincerity, that I can't complain, which is the truth. I am quite happy with where I am in life and I think once everyone else can get to that point, the world will be one step closer to a better place.
Just my opinion.
