In Memoriam: Natasha Richardson (1964 - 2009)

Demetria Dixon
As the lights dimmed once again on Broadway, this time for Natasha Richardson, one can not help but ponder the loss of such a great talent.

It would be easy to repeat Natasha Richardson's long list of credits, but this has been done ad infinitum. As one of the greatest actors of her time, her body of work really needs no explanation.

To say that I am shocked by this turn of events is no understatement. A famous death is always startling because it seems that those, for whom fame and fortune have shined, lead extraordinary lives that should be bypassed by events of such randomness. However, death's equity is absolute. It cares nothing for our wealth or our indigence.

I didn't know Natasha Richardson. However, I feel a great deal of melancholy at this loss. She was a phenomenal actress but more than that it always seemed that she and husband, Liam Neeson, represented the iconic great love affair. The joy at having found that unquantifiable quantity in one another always appeared to glow from within.

Having suffered loss it would be simple to say that I understand what the family is going through. But the fact of the matter is that my grief like each of theirs is personal.

To The Family

Though I can identify, I have no idea how it feels for you to lose your beloved. In situations such as this 'what-ifs' abound. Perhaps, those things are uppermost in your mind. Let time be a balm to salve this wound. Imbibe your rich memories; drink them deep and let them be an elixir. It is only time that heals. Kind words, platitudes and good thoughts shore us up but it is time that renders us whole again.

The name Natasha Richardson did not mean anything to me. It was very sad to see a young woman perish from such an accident. I wish the family all the best at a very difficult time.
