In Memory Of.

An Ekphrastic Poem (sort Of) About the Arbuckle Mountains in Oklahoma

Amanda James Dill
In memory of Holly Ann,
an unknown girl whose
friend or lover felt she
would be best memorialized
in spray paint on rock
at a rest stop on the
south-bound side
of an Oklahoma highway.

In memory of beryl skies
and the earthy scent
that hangs in the air
after a warm summer
rain that softens the
sharp edges and washes
away the dust that
disguises the brightest
among our treasures.

In memory of once-tall mountains,
former giants now relegated to
carved out, painted, toppled
versions of their former selves,
a group of girlfriends
whose faces have
seen and heard and lived
it all--standing, still,
in remembrance of
nothing, and everything.
