In Search of an Adventure: My Quest for a Quest

Jon Strak
I woke up this morning ready for 2007! 2006, to be honest, was ok but lacked that spectacular quality that I look for in a year.

I am currently visiting my parents so while I listened to their recap of what was a very eventful middle aged New Year's party, I perused yesterday's paper, and came across the story of Kyle MacDonald, who in 12 months managed to trade a red paper clip for a house (ok, 12 months and 14 trades).

Looking through his website, I found many other people doing similar things. Some were trading paperclips, black t-shirt, and Smurf collections in hopes of gaining houses, cars, and multi-million dollar media companies. I also found the website of a guy who is attempting to begin with one cent and after doubling his money 28 times, to be a millionaire. These stories called to mind other quests I have read about--people attempting to travel around the world for free, searching for 50 people with whom they shared their full first and last name--all crazy ideas that actually worked.

Now, I have nothing but the utmost faith in 2007 and feel this is just the year for such an adventure. Basically, I want a quest (which I guess currently puts me on a quest for a quest). The only question is what to do.

This is why I need your help.

I am in my mid-twenties, work (sort of) as a freelance writer (sort of), live in the US, travel a good bit, love adventures, and have been told that my level of personal determination is frightening (in a good way I think).

So, what I'm wondering is does anyone have any ideas? I'm looking for any thing you have tried or thought of, but not been able to follow through, or any ideas that you thought of and then decided we impossible or just too crazy to actually work. If so, please let me know.

In the meantime, I intend to blog about my quest for a quest.

Parameters:

The quest can be for anything--money, house (or other goods), experience and/or travel (I met a person once who was determined to photograph every McDonald's in the US), anything.

Given that I only sort of work at a sort of profession, the project should require little if any start-up capital.

There must be an end goal.

I'm pretty open to crazy ideas. Try me.

You can do it with me, or live vicariously through my adventures!
