In Store Promotions Gone Bad: How to Deal

Carrie Lowe
We have all seen the advertisements, spend at least $500 and receive 10% off when financed with insert store credit card here. These offers tend to vary based on the amount you have to spend, the discount and even the store card but essentially they are all the same. Typically speaking these can be a great deal, but what happens when this deal goes wrong and you do not know where to turn to for help? With thousands of people taking advantage of these offers, it is incredibly easy to find yourself in a position where the terms of your offer have been overlooked.

Your first step is to actually wait until the offer should appear on your statement. For example, many credit card offers require that you wait at least 45 days before the discount will be applied, while others say that the discount will be applied at the time of purchase. Regardless of when the discount is to be applied, you need to be watching for it and make sure that you note when it does not happen so you can act quickly.

Of course discounts that are to be taken immediately at the register are much easier to correct since there will be no time waiting on the bill to come in to actually find out that there was a mistake. Of course, looking at your billing statement closely when it does come in to ensure that the terms were all actually fulfilled is still a good idea.

In the event that the discount will show up on your credit card statement, in the form of deferred interest, or even a significant reduction in interest and this does not happen, you need to immediately call your credit card company and start talking to supervisors to get the problem resolved. You should also take the time to make a written dispute as well to ensure that you follow all of the dispute requirements that are in place.

A final note is to look into checking over all of the documentation that you received in connection with the purchase to ensure that you really do understand all of the paperwork. This will sure that you get the best deal possible, while still fully understand the offer that you signed up for. Getting what is owed to you is important, but making sure that you are aware of what the offer actually was is also very important.

If you have no luck with the actual credit card company, be sure to follow up with the corporate office for the store in which the purchase was made, especially if it was an offer that was advertised in store until your dispute is satisfactorily resolved. Taking the time to contact the corporate office for a store after a dispute can allow them to ensure that you are getting what was promised to you, while still having the opportunity to correct any problems that you are having.
