In a Summer State

Louisa Burgess

Leaving New York, you look out the window of the plane
at the Empire State Building and
Statue of Liberty.

You wax sentimental about familiar places
and faces you recognize every day
that won't be available.

At the same time lusting for a new life
in a new place that
will bring change and happiness .

Excitement abounds on the way to a warmer place
with no snow on the ground
like that you left behind.

What's going on here you finally ask
when summer has snuck up
behind you.

Where did spring go to, you wonder
that season of newness and forsythia
just doesn't seem to exist here.

Very few dewy mornings with the scent
of flowers in the air in this place
where summer rules.

Ah summer you say, I always loved summer
back in New York in July
when the heat pounded off the pavement.

Summer, oh summer, how nice to greet you
in the early part of May in this new place
I have found myself in today.

sounds like a great experience. here in Texas we are getting ready to cook our eggs on the sidewalk and watch the asphalt roads turn to molten lava b/c of the heat. LOL
