In Victoria, Texas, Illegal Immigration Fight Happening at the Local Level

Local Law Enforcement and Other Services Need the Millions Being Spent on Bigger Projects

Shawn Clark
VICTORIA, Texas - There aren't many more hot-button issues in this presidential election year than illegal immigration. All across the country, from the Mexican border to the Canadian, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, Americans are choosing sides in the debate over illegal immigration.

The federal government is considering expanding the fence along the Mexican border to prevent the untold numbers of illegal immigrants who make the dangerous trek into the U.S. every day. But in many small community near the border, law enforcement officials are wonder why the government is willing to spend millions on a fence that many say will not do what it is intended to do, while the police and sheriffs' deputies on the front lines cannot afford to track down and deal with the immigrants that are crossing through their jurisdictions every day.

In Victoria County, Texas, which lies along U.S. Highway 59 - a major route for transporting illegal immigrants and drugs to Houston - the county sheriff and police are tasked with maintaining order. But they often find themselves at a loss when major incidents happen, both in equipment and manpower, and struggle to find the funding necessary to handle these massive undertakings.

The smaller communities of Texas, as well as the other border states, deserve more support by the federal government. While the men and women on Capitol Hill want to make grand statements concerning illegal immigration - no matter which side of the issue they choose to take - the men and women on the front lines of the action - the local peace officers and staffs of the regional law enforcement agencies, are struggling just to be able to do their jobs. The extension of the border fence may grab headlines and allow politicians to prove that they are taking a stand against more illegal immigrants flooding into the U.S., but the reality is that the money would most likely be better used if at least some of it went to fund operations in the smaller localities near the border.

Even those that fall on the "pro" side of illegal immigration would better serve their ideals if they focused more on the local municipalities. Hospitals and medical clinics are in over their heads treating immigrants who do not have health insurance, but cannot be turned away for treatment. Similarly, shelters, food banks, and outreach centers struggle to be able to serve their clients - many of whom are female illegals and their children who find themselves without a father and husband if he gets arrested and deported.

Illegal immigration promises to be a huge issue in this year's campaign, and many others in the future. Barack Obama and John McCain - as well as every other politician striving for office - want to make a powerful and noticeable statement of their position on the issue. But neither seems to be aware, or at least do not think that it is "buzz-worthy" enough to realize that the real battles are being fought on a much smaller scale than anybody talks about. The real fight over illegal immigration is taking place on the local level in the towns and counties of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and every other state in the Union. Big, flashy projects like the border fence might grab headlines, but the millions of dollars going to those projects would most likely be put to better use at the local level.

  • Victoria is on U.S. Highway 59 - a major corridor for trafficking illegal immigrants and drugs.
  • The border fence expansion could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • Local law enforcement is often struggling to find resources for dealing with illegal immigrants.

Old article, but still a hot button topic. I do not think the general population is aware of how much harm is done to health care due to free health care. Locally hospitals and clinics are on the verge of bankruptcy due to federal funding being cut; yet still forced to provide emergency treatment free of charge to anyone. The emergency room is filled with people, many illegal immigrants, using it as regular doctor visit or they are milking the system at the expense of taxpayers and legal U.S. residents. It is also sad when a drug runner, gets shot then the border patrol officer goes to jail. The drug runner, not a U.S. citizen, trying to cross the border bypassing security caused himself to get shot.

You know everyone is blamming everyone for the immagration problem. but i wish someone would open there eyes and see. IF the president or someone important would pay attention to the WORK AND FOOD HELP that our people need.In there own country maybe just maybe our people would not have to come over here and work and send money to take care of their own families back at home. Also if some of our people here would not be SO LAZY and do the work that needs to be done. Maybe just maybe something could be done..That is FREEDOM OF SPEECH..

Why is it so hard for politicans like Bush and McCain to understant that Americans want a controlled entrance and exit for their nation? Why they refuse to understand that Americans are tired of being mexicos DUMPSTER is hard to understand. I believe that McCain would rather lose the election than stop supporting amnesty. If he was serious about national security he would have done something about border security long ago. Looks bad for those who support the rule of law and enforcement of our immigration laws.To reward people who commit a class 4 felony with citizenship is idiotic.

    Actually, we do.
Ron Paul is still in the running, although not actively campaigning. Could be write in(?)
Also, check out Chuck Baldwin @ www.baldwin2008.com
At least there are a few options other than pro-amnesty candidates. : )

To bad we don't have a Presidential candidate that will do anything about securing our borders.

There's nothing "negative" about it. The federal government's priorities and perspectives are too far removed from the ground level to really understand what's going on. The money would be better used by people and agencies that have first-hand knowledge and experience with what's happening at the local level.

And the legislation regarding fence, as it stands now, is nothing close to what most people think it is. Our congressmen have warped the original proposal so much that it is no longer cost-effective, or really useful at all.

What we need are better resources for the people on the front lines.

  • DinTN8/6/2008

I'm glad more people aren't that negative. :(

Illegal Immigration was caused by the non-enforcement of our laws.
Enforcement works and sends illegals to other areas of the US and out of America.

A fence is not the "cure all", but it sure will help!
