In-Vitro Fertilization Versus Adoption - 5 Things that Every Infertile Couple Needs to Know

Lindsey Russell
When infertile couples are ready to become parents and are considering their options, there are 5 essential items that they need to keep in mind.

1. Read some first hand accounts of men and women who have gone through each process.

With the advent of personal blogs, infertile couples can easily research personal experiences of couples that have gone through in-vitro fertilization and adoption. They give a lot of insight into the personal journey each couple faces when going through the adoption or in-vitro fertilization processes.

In many cases, it will help infertile couples make of their mind with regards to their options.

2. Consider all of the children in need of adoption.

This is perhaps one of the most compelling reasons to seriously consider adoption. There are already so many children all over the world that are in need of good parents. If an infertile couple is truly ready to become parents, there are many children out there just waiting for such a couple. If anyone suggests that adoptive parents and children don't share the same bond as biological children and parents, he or she needs to spend just an hour or two with an adopted child and his or her parents. It simply isn't true.

3. The success rate of in-vitro fertilization is constantly changing.

While it is true that the rates of successful in-vitro fertilization aren't exactly wonderful, the technique has gone through major advances since its introduction. It will only get better. That having been said, it is not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination. It can really take a toll on the relationship between the infertile couple.

4. Like it or not, you have to take financial issues into consideration.

It seems unnatural, unfair, and cruel, but financial considerations have to be made when pursuing both in-vitro fertilization and adoptions. Neither is cheap. In the case of in-vitro fertilization, the couple often has to go through the process more than once. Even then, they may not be successful. If you are considering adoption a child from a country such as China, there may be financial requirements that have to be met. In both cases, the process needs to be approached with as much information as possible.

5. There are other options out there.

For many infertile couples, there are often other options out there. Some infertility can be treated by surgery or medication. In other cases, infertility can't be adequately addressed. No matter what type of infertility a couple is experiencing; they always have the option of not becoming parents. It is a perfectly respectable decision and couples (infertile or not) deciding not to have children should not be looked upon as selfish or greedy. Some people can get just as much enjoyment out of spending time and spoiling their nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as the children of friends.

By taking into consideration these few items, infertile couples will better be able to analyze parenting option. When considering in-vitro fertilization and adoption, there will undoubtedly be a lot of soul-searching that needs to take place before an infertile couple is comfortable with their decision.
